The Vincennes Bay is a large V-shaped bay on the western Budd Coast of the East Antarctic Wilkes Land . Your entrance between Cape Nutt and Cape Folger is 104 km wide. Several large and steep glaciers, including the Adams Glacier and the Bond Glacier , flow into this bay.
The first aerial photographs were taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) , led by the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . It was first used in January 1948 by the icebreaker USCGC Burton Island in Operation Windmill (1947-1948). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them after the sloop USS Vincennes , flagship of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of the American polar explorer Charles Wilkes , from which between January and February 1840 stretches of coast of Wilkesland were discovered and mapped were. Wilkes' maps show that the expedition may have been near this bay, even though pack ice prevented an approach to the coast at the time.
