The Hatch Islands are a small group of rocky islands that lie 3 miles east of Ivanoff Head at the head of Vincennes Bay off the coast of East Antarctic Wilkesland . They mark the boundary between the Knox Coast and the Budd Coast .
They were first mapped on the basis of aerial photographs taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) under the direction of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Further explorations by helicopter were carried out as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition led by Phillip Law in 1960. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the islands in 1963 after Ernest B. Hatch, tractor operator of the United States Navy in Operation Windmill (1947–1948 ).
