The Ivanoff Head is a small, rocky headland (possibly an island ) on the Knox coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is partially covered by the Antarctic Ice Sheet 6.5 km west of the Hatch Islands at the head of Vincennes Bay .
The formation was first photographed from the air as part of Operation Highjump (1946–1947) under the direction of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the property Brooks Island in 1956 . The current name originated in Australia in 1961 and has since established itself. During the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions , helicopters landed on the headland for the first time in February 1961, which served as a rescue base after a helicopter crash. The cape is named after Peter B. Ivanoff, pilot of the crashed Hiller UH-12 .
