description

Large-leaved chickweed are perennial plants with heights of 5 to 25 centimeters. The rhizome forms an extensive network with many sterile and flowering shoots. The plant has several upright stems with very short hairs and no basal leaves. The numerous sessile, lanceolate to elliptical, bare leaves are 2–5 cm long and 2–12 mm wide and end abruptly in a spike tip. The white flowers are in loose, 2–5 blooming cymes. The 5 egg-shaped sepals are 2.5–6 mm long and end in a point. The 5 white petals are 2–10 mm long. The round, egg-shaped seed is 1.5–2.2 mm long with a fleshy appendage ("Caruncula", Elaiosom ).

The large-leaved umbilical chickweed is tetraploid with chromosome number 2n = 48. It blooms from late spring to summer.

Occurrence

The plant prefers moist, shady slopes, rocks and beaches from 200 to 3400 m above sea level as a location.

The general distribution area includes Canada as well as the northern and western states of the USA.
