The Baiturrahman Great Mosque (also Raya Baiturrahman Mosque , Masjid Baiturrahman , Masjid Raya Baiturrahman ) is a mosque located in the center of Banda Aceh , the capital of the Indonesian province of Aceh . It has a great symbolic meaning for the local Achinese people for their religion and culture, especially after the building survived the tsunami of 2004 with relatively no consequences.

history

The mosque was designed by the Italian architect de Bruchi and built by the Dutch colonial administration as a symbol of reconciliation as the city's older main mosque was destroyed during the Aceh War (1873-1903). Construction began in 1879 and the building was completed in 1881. The foundation stone was laid by Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil, who later became the first imam of the house. Some elements were added to the building during the 20th century. Since 1936, two domes have been added to the sides of the mosque. In 1957, a fourth and fifth domes were finally added to represent the five pillars of Islam . It now has a total of seven domes and eight minarets , one of which is said to be the tallest in Banda Aceh. After the 2004 tsunami, the mosque temporarily served as a shelter for the population of the largely destroyed city.

architecture

The design of the mosque combines influences from colonial and Indian Mughal architecture .
