The Great saddle shell ( Monia patelliformis , . Syn : Anomia patelliformis , Pododesmus patelliformis ) is a shell - type from the family of anomiidae (Anomiidae). It is native to the eastern Atlantic and its tributaries.

features

The unevenly hinged housing is rounded and rectangular; often a little higher than long. It becomes about 4 cm long and is very flat, i.e. H. the flaps are barely bulged. The shape of the case is variable and is influenced by the substrate to which the case with the calcified byssus is attached. The edge of the case is irregular, but smooth (not serrated). The vertebra sits roughly in the middle, slightly offset from the edge of the case. The pear-shaped byssus hole in the right or lower flap is usually not closed. On the outside, the left (and upper) flap has 20 to 60 radial ridges which are irregular and are often interrupted by the growth strips. The right, lower flap is thin, fragile and transparent, the left, upper flap is also thin, but solid and not translucent. The lock is toothless, occasionally with a hint of a longitudinal ridge just above the ligament. The ligament is a crescent-shaped pit below the vertebrae.

On the left or upper valve, sphincter and byssus muscle impressions are separated; on the right valve only the sphincter impression is present. The byssus retractor, located closer to the dorsal edge of the housing, is much larger and clearly separated from the much smaller sphincter muscle. The periostracum is usually no longer present. The upper flap is light brown to brown. The inside of the skin is whitish, in the middle it is slightly green or yellowish.

Similar species

In the northern European species Monia squama , the sphincter and byssus muscles are fused together on the left valve. The large saddle shell ( Anomia ephippium ) is significantly larger and has three muscle impressions in the left valve. The small saddle shell ( Heteranomia squamula ) has no radial ribs on the surface of the left valve. The left flap has two muscle impressions separated by a fine line.

Geographical distribution and way of life

The saddle shell occurs in the North Atlantic from Iceland and Northern Norway to the Mediterranean Sea and along the African coast to Angola , as well as in the Azores . It lives on shallow water down to a depth of around 1,400 meters.

The large saddle shell lies with the right flap and with the calcified byssus attached to stones, mussel and snail shells. The top of the left flap at the top is mostly covered with barnacles , tube worms and algae . It feeds on plankton, which it filters out of the water with its gills.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1761 by Carl von Linné as anomia patelliformis . The species is now part of the genus Monia Gray, 1850.
