The Große Scharrenstraße in Rostock is a street in the historic center of the Hanseatic city .

It runs from the junction at An der Hege / Hinter dem Rathaus to the junction with the Kleine Wasserstraße . The Große Scharrenstraße, which is located behind the Rostock town hall , is part of the former Rostock Mittelstadt .

Grosse Scharrenstrasse is connected to the Neuer Markt via a glass passage at the northern extension of the town hall . It is one of the once proverbial seven streets that led into the Neuer Markt.

The Great Scharrenstraße was in 1259 as platea macellae mentioned ( "Street of the meat stalls") for the first time. In fact, meat was sold on this street from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. The word scratching comes from Low German and roughly means table or bench . The original German name of this street was Bei den Fleischscharren der Mittelstadt . When the name Scharrenstraße became established, the word "large" was added to the name in order to separate the Große Scharrenstraße from the street Beim Alten Scharren , which is now called Am Bliesathsberg .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the meat scrapers were torn down. In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942 , Große Scharrenstrasse was seriously damaged. The only historical building in today's Große Scharrenstraße is a town house from the 13th century, which faces the street An der Hege with its plastered gable , but from the rear gable and the side front you can recognize the real age of the house.

From Grosse Scharrenstrasse you have a view of the depression in the direction of the former pit, today's Grubenstrasse .
