Great Synagogue (Toporiw)

Former synagogue (2013)

The Great Synagogue in Toporiw in the Ukrainian Lviv Oblast is now a warehouse.

history

Nothing is known precisely about the year of construction. In 1635 a synagogue was desecrated during armed conflicts. It is unclear whether it was the current building. As early as 1800 there were other small prayer houses of the Hasidic Jews in addition to a Great Synagogue . With the exception of a blind window on the east facade, there are neither outside nor inside clear features that would allow the building to be clearly assigned to a construction period or style. The shape of the window and the decor speak for Baroque or late Renaissance .

The building was badly damaged in World War II and was later used as a warehouse.

architecture

Among other things:

  • Change of the window shape over time from arched to rectangular,
  • Smoothing profiled window frames,
  • Dismantling of the side galleries and the vestibule,
  • Adding scales to the facades on 3 sides.

The building now has an unattractive appearance as a result of the conversion to a warehouse.

The outer dimensions of the synagogue are 15.4 × 15.4 m. The facade has a height of 8.9 m. The interior consists of the main room, the former men's prayer room. Originally there were two floors; the ground floor and the first floor. When it was converted into a warehouse in the 1950s, it was divided into three floors. The roof is a hip roof covered on four sides with sheet metal.

Bima , Torah shrine and inscriptions are no longer preserved. Very small remains of an original multi-colored painting can still be seen.
