Great Synagogue (Hrodna)
The Great Synagogue in Hrodna , the fifth largest Belarusian city in Hrodsenskaya Woblasz , was built between 1902 and 1905. It is on Wielka Troicka Street.
The synagogue in oriental style was built by the architect Ilya Frounkin.
Before 1941, the proportion of the Jewish population in Hrodna was high. The majority of the Jewish population was murdered by the German occupiers during World War II . In the area of the Grodno ghetto there was also the Great Synagogue, which was devastated inside during the war.
From 1944 to 1991 the synagogue building was used as a warehouse. After that, the building was returned to the Jewish community, which began extensive renovations.
