Synagogue in Porasawa (2014)

The synagogue in Porasawa , a place in Hrodsenskaya Woblasz in northern Belarus , was built in the first half of the 19th century. It was misused after the Second World War .

history

The synagogue probably built in 1825. It was damaged several times by fires in the 19th century and has been repeatedly restored afterwards. It was also damaged in the Second World War, but then rebuilt. It was converted into a department store. Today the building is empty and in ruins.

architecture

The exterior has been preserved in its original form up to the roof cornice with dimensions of 15.70 × 20.10 m and a height of 7.00 m. The walls are made of large gravel and bricks, the new roof gable is made of bricks. The roof is covered with asbestos sheets.

Two window levels divide the outer walls; the lower windows were rectangular and the upper ones were arched. Some of the windows and arches are now walled up.

Inside, the original form (vestibule, main room, women's rooms) is barely recognizable. In addition to the division into two rooms, a second floor was also moved. The ceiling is supported on the ground floor by brick pillars and on the upper floor by wooden pillars.

The niche of the Torah shrine still exists on the east wall, but is divided by a brick pillar.
