history

Synagogue (1939)
Torah Shrine (1939)
Destroyed synagogue (1946)

The synagogue dates from 1648. It had flat extensions on the sides and a corner pavilion in the southwest. It is not clear whether these have existed since the beginning or are the result of later renovations. In 1919 the building was damaged by fire, but was then reconstructed.

During the Second World War , the synagogue was set on fire and badly damaged. After the end of the war, the ruins were finally torn down.

architecture

The main hall was almost square. It had 12 windows; 11 of them were slender arched windows and there was an oculus above the Torah shrine .

The roof gable did not run parallel to the east-west axis as usual, but perpendicular to it. However, it can be assumed that this only happened later during a renovation.

The octagonal bima was surrounded by a balustrade . It stood between four pillars that formed a canopy-like roof over it. This type is known as a support bima .

The Torah shrine on the east wall probably came from the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century. It was accessible via two small stairs on its sides and framed by two columns and behind them pairs of pilasters .
