Map with all coordinates: The Great Istanbul Tunnel ( Turkish Büyük İstanbul Tüneli ) is an undersea tunnel for road and rail traffic in Istanbul that crosses under the Bosphorus . The project received approval from the city administration in early 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2023 . After the Eurasia Tunnel and the Marmaray Tunnel, this is the third tunnel that connects the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. It is the first three-story tunnel in the world.
Former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu announced on February 27, 2015 the construction of a 6.5 kilometer long tunnel with three levels around 110 meters below the surface of the Bosphorus. Two floors are to accommodate road traffic and one in between with two tracks will accommodate rail traffic. The tunnel connects the Şişli district on the European side with Beykoz in the Asian part of the city. This will be achieved so that a close connection of the three city airports ( Ataturk Airport , Sabiha Gokcen Airport and Istanbul Airport ) and between the nine lines of the Metro Istanbul . In addition, the bridges over the Bosporus are to be relieved.
The driveway will start at Hasdal Kavşağı ( Şişli district ) and lead to the end point Çamlık kavşağı in the Beykoz district . The tunnel itself will lead from Gayrettepe via Arnavutköy under the Bosporus to Küçüksu.
The cost of the entire project is expected to amount to around 3.5 billion US dollars. The project is financed as part of an operator model .
The tender for the construction went to the Turkish Yüksel Proje Uluslararası A.Ş in April 2017 .
