The Große Lochstein is an imposing rock tower made of Franconian dolomite in the Veldenstein Forest . The rock with its through cave is a natural monument and was included in the list of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria .

Directions

The Große Lochstein can be reached via the Pegnitz exit of the federal highway 9 and further on the federal road 470 towards Auerbach in the Upper Palatinate . The Alte Veste forest car park with access to the Habicht circular hiking trail is located approximately at the level of Horlach . After 700 meters you reach the Großer Lochstein.

geology

The Großer Lochstein represents the karst landscape of the Lower Cretaceous . Sand deposits, which have since been removed, have preserved this relic. It is designated as an important geotope (geotope number: 472R086) and a natural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . The name suggests the counterpart of the Kleiner Lochstein .
