The great willow glass-winged butterfly ( Sesia bembeciformis ) is a butterfly from the glass-winged family (Sesiidae).

features

The Large Willow clearwings recalls his warning coloration and his behavior at Hornets - potential predators avoid him by. The species is therefore also known as the hornet hawk . Such an adaptation is also called mimicry . The adults are around 32 to 42 millimeters tall.

The species from the hornet glass winged ( Sesia apiformis ) can hardly be distinguished by laypeople . However, this has yellow color areas on the "shoulders" directly above the wing approaches, the large willow glass winged wing is dark at this point except for the yellow neck ring.

The moths appear in July and are then found resting on the trunks of the forage plants. These include goat willow ( Salix caprea ) and Salix cinerea ( Salix cinerea ). The eggs are laid on the bark. The larvae then drill into the wood and eat there.
