Large wind tunnel
The large wind tunnel of the aerodynamic park in Berlin-Adlershof was built from 1932 to 1934. The wind tunnel was used for aerodynamic studies in air currents. In the tubular system with a diameter between 8.5 m and 12 m, the air flow was directed in a measuring room onto aircraft parts and their resistance behavior was measured. A special feature is the Zeiss Dywidag shell construction with a wall thickness of 8 cm. The renovated monument is only rarely opened to small groups of people, as it is statically not very resilient.
The wind tunnel is listed as part of the former location of the German Aviation Research Institute .
Other uses
Due to its unusual architecture, it served as the backdrop for the film Æon Flux (2005), which is set 400 years in the future. Numerous scenes were filmed inside the tube or inside the wind tunnel. Other productions, such as the action film Wer ist Hanna? (2011), have since used the wind tunnel as a backdrop.
