The Großmarkthalle Leipzig (colloquially Kohlrabizirkus ) is the former wholesale market hall of the city of Leipzig , which is now used as an event hall and is a listed building.

history

The dome was built in 1927–1929 by the construction company Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG in shell construction. The two of the three originally planned dome shells were the largest solid domes in the world at the time of their completion, with a span of 75 meters and a total building height of 29 meters. The elliptically shaped shells made of reinforced concrete are nine centimeters thick. They are each supported by eight inclined columns. The architectural design came from the Leipzig city planning officer Hubert Ritter . The dome was designed and calculated by the civil engineers Franz Dischinger and Hubert Rüsch .

Due to its form and previous function, it is used in Leipzig a. a. "Kohlrabi circus" called, this term is now also used by the operators of the hall.

In autumn 2013, the domes of the former wholesale market hall were recognized by the Federal Chamber of Engineers as a historical landmark of engineering in Germany .

use

The halls are no longer in operation as a wholesale market since October 31, 1995. The north hall is used for concerts, flea markets, etc. Used and offers space for up to 2500 people. The total area is 5300 m². The south hall was used as an ice dome in winter from 2000 to 2012 and, at 2200 m², offered the largest indoor ice rink in Germany, but since 2012 the facility has moved to a new location. Since May 2014, the Techno-Club Institut für Zukunft has been located in the basement of the northern dome .

From the beginning of the 2018/2019 season, the north hall of the complex was the home ground of the Icefighters Leipzig . For this purpose, an appropriate ice surface and grandstands have been prepared for an initial 2,500 spectators. The establishment of a bouldering hall and a trampoline park was also planned. The rental agreement was terminated by the owner, Vicus Group AG, in July 2019. Before that, there were differences due to structural defects and limited usability of the hall. In addition, the association had not applied for subsidies to cover the rental costs in good time.
