The large stone graves near Linden were two grave systems of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near the Linden district in the district of Uelzen , Lower Saxony, which belongs to the Schwienau community . The graves were described by Georg Otto Carl von Estorff in 1846 . The two large stone graves were already showing major damage at this point in time and were completely destroyed in the second half of the 19th century. The two systems have the Sprockhoff numbers 793 and 794.

location

Location of the graves (nos. 13 and 14) according to von Estorff

The two graves were located on a hill near the Verhorn-Mühle residential area south of the Gerdau river near the municipal boundary. They were in the middle between two groups of burial mounds .

description

Grave 1

Grave 1 after von Estorff

The complex had a north-east-south-west oriented burial chamber with a length of 4.9 m and a width of 1.75 m. When von Estorff took it, four wall stones were still preserved on the north-western long side and three on the south-eastern long side. Originally there were probably five pairs of wall stones. Of the end stones, only the south-western one remained, which, however, did not cover the entire width of the narrow side. Inside the chamber were two fallen capstones and two smaller stones, which were probably fragments of a third capstone.

Grave 2

Grave 2 after von Estorff

Grave 2 was very similar to the neighboring facility. The burial chamber was also oriented northeast-southwest and had approximately identical dimensions with a length of 5 m and a width of 1.8 m. In 1846 almost all of the wall stones were still in situ . Only the most south-westerly stone of the south-east long side was no longer in its original position and was possibly dragged a little to the east outside the chamber. In its original state, the chamber had a total of five pairs of wall stones on the long sides and one end stone each on the narrow sides. Only one of the capstones was left, which had fallen down inside the chamber.
