The Nordsteimke large stone grave is a burial site of the Neolithic funnel beaker culture in the Wolfsburg district of Nordsteimke . It was discovered in 1968 by a farmer while plowing his field and excavated in 1969 by the archaeologist Franz Niquet .
location
The grave was reconstructed in 1975 and built on site at the school, but moved to the outskirts in 2008 due to expansion work. There is an information board that was newly installed in 2018.
description
During his investigation, Niquet found seven stones that were no longer in situ , one of which was particularly large and weighed around four tons. From these findings he reconstructed the original appearance of the grave as an enlarged dolmen with two pairs of wall stones on the long sides, a single, large capstone and an entrance on one of the narrow sides. After the excavation, the stones were initially removed and later reconstructed. However, since a final excavation report was never presented and steel and concrete were also used in the reconstruction, the reconstruction cannot be regarded as true to the original.
