Steinbeck stone grave (Westphalia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Steinbeck large stone grave was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Steinbeck , a district of Recke in the Steinfurt district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was probably destroyed in the 19th century.

location

The exact location of the grave is unknown. Johannes Heinrich Müller only gives the place Steinbeck (incorrectly called Sternbeck ) in general . D. Meyer mentioned large stones at the Steinbeck School in 1850. Possibly this is the large stone grave.

Research history

Johannes Heinrich Müller found the grave still preserved in 1867. The exact time of its destruction is unknown.

description

According to Müller, in 1867 the grave still consisted of a capstone that rested on three wall stones. The top of the capstone was moderately indented in the middle. A fifth stone was not far from it. It was about 6 feet long and had five holes in a semicircle. Presumably they were blast holes.

The grave in regional sagas

According to a legend , the holes on each stone are said to have been the imprints of a giant hand.
