Groat (" Groschen ") is the name for the silver 4-pence piece, which was minted in the United Kingdom as a currency coin until 1855; as the largest coin in the Maundy Set, it is still present today . The first groats were minted in 1279 during the reign of Edward I.

A similar coin was the North German Groten , which was initially worth 4 (Meissniche) pfennigs and later 5 swarms .
