Reese mine housing estate

The Reese mine housing estate is a deserted area in the Steyerberg district of Reese in Lower Saxony . The former name of the settlement, which mainly consists of pit houses , is not known as there is no written record. It is believed to have existed during the first three centuries AD and from the 8th to 14th centuries.
The settlement was known in the 1960s after discoveries on the earth's surface, including when a bypass was built . Prior to the planned development of the area, the local archeology of the Schaumburg landscape, responsible for the preservation of monuments in the district of Nienburg , had an archaeological investigation carried out in 2020. It was carried out by an excavation company . Around 350 findings were found on an area of one hectare , including many of good quality. The discoloration of the floor indicated the former existence of 19 mine houses, which previously served mainly as workshops. There was also evidence of a residential building. The finds include an iron fitting for a wooden spade, a belt hook made of bronze, a rider's spur with a spike, fibulas , coins , knife blades as well as ceramic vessels and fragments.
According to archaeologists, the settlement was used for living and doing crafts. Since nothing is known about the settlement situation from the 4th to the 8th century, they do not rule out a desert fall during this time. The archaeologists suspect that the old Saxon cemetery of Liebenau, about one kilometer away, served as a cemetery with around 500 burials.
