Gruene is a historic district of New Braunfels . The village was founded by the sons of the German settlers Ernst and Antoinette Gruene. Already in the 19th century there was a bank, a post office, a school, a dance hall for the local workers, a grist mill and a cotton ginning machine in Gruene. Two rails made it easier to load the cotton.

According to the owner, the Gruene Hall dance hall, built in 1878 by Heinrich D. Gruene, is still in operation to this day and is known as the "oldest dance hall still in use in Texas". Performances by Willie Nelson , George Strait , Townes Van Zandt , Jerry Jeff Walker , Lyle Lovett , Hal Ketchum , Greg Allman , Tom Gillam and many others made the Gruene Hall legendary. In 1996 she was the location in the film Michael with John Travolta .
