The Guangdong Museum ( 广东 省 博物馆 , Guǎngdōngshěng Bówùguǎn ; self-designation English: Guangdong Museum; also Guangdong Sheng Museum) is located in the southern part of the center of the new town of Guangzhou on the Pearl River. The planning of the new building , which opened in 2010, had started 6 years earlier. It is the comprehensive museum of Guangdong Province and is one of the first category national museums. The new building of the museum (from 2010, the old part was closed) has a land area of ​​41,027 m² and offers 66,980 m² of usable space.

The new building houses exhibitions on the history and culture of Guangdong, as well as the areas of art and nature. The description of the exhibits mainly provides information on function, economic importance, innovation, science and technology, and artistic importance. In this way the unique character of the Lingnan culture and the high level of the museum and its collections are to be represented.

Permanent exhibitions

The three departments are spread over a total of five exhibition halls:

  • The history department is represented in the exhibition "History and Culture of Guangdong".
  • The art department is divided into the exhibitions "Movements in painting and calligraphy - the painting of the Sung - and the Yuan period and calligraphy in the course of history".
  • “The art of earth and fire. Exhibition of the museum's ceramic treasures ”.
  • “Purple Stones of Duration - the Art of Duanxi Ink Stones”, made from Duanxi stone from Yaocian County in Guangdong Province.
  • The chapter on nature is presented in the exhibition “Guangdong's Mountains, Clear Water and the Fertile Lingnan - Guangdong's Natural Resources”.

Special exhibitions

The museum holds several special exhibitions every year. Information can be found on the museum's website under “Special exhibitions” ( 临时 展览 , línshí zhǎnlǎn ). The exhibition at the end of 2015 z. B. dealt with the Neolithic Liangzhu culture in southeast China about 5000 years ago. Jade vessels , ceramics, textiles, wooden vessels, stone vessels and the like are produced under the motto The dream from 5000 years ago . a. shown. The objects come from the Liangzhu culture, which in the geographical area Zhejiang - Jiangsu developed from clan culture to feudal culture .
