The eleven-sided part of the guano fleet

The Guanofleet is a canal in Hamburg - Steinwerder . Nowadays it consists of two parts. The northern small part branches off orographically to the left of the Elbe at river kilometer 622.4 ( Lage ) . Separated by the now fixed crossing of Norderelbstraße, there is the second, longer remainder.

history

The Guano Fleet was built in 1853 as one of the first canals south of the North Elbe. It ran between Reiherstieg and Mittelkanal and connected the Elbe with the Norderloch . There was a copper melt right at the confluence with the Elbe.

While the southern connection was filled in for use as a shipyard and the canal was shortened to a length of 320 meters ( location ), the backfilling of the bridge crossing on Norderelbstraße resulted in a division into two parts and the final termination of the use of the canal for shipping. The port structure plan, which came into force in 1995 in order to create compensation areas for buildings and to redesign the Elbe in a natural way, formed the basis for a rededication of the Guano Fleet.

The theater in the port of Hamburg has been located on the site of the former copper smelter since 1994 and the theater on the Elbe since 2014 .
