The Guardia Real ( German  Royal Guard ) is an independent military unit of the Spanish armed forces , which serves to protect the king and his family.

history

The Guardia Real has existed in a constantly changing form since the Middle Ages, but was dissolved by the Second Republic in 1931. After the end of the Spanish Civil War it was reintroduced by Franco as the Casa Militar de su Excelencia el Generalísimo y Jefe del Estado . It was the direct predecessor of today's Guardia Real. It also serves to protect foreign heads of state and buildings such as the Royal Palace in Madrid , the Palacio de la Zarzuela , the Palacio El Pardo and others.
