Gudina Tumsa

Gudina Tumsa (* 1929 in Boji , Oromia , Ethiopia ; † July 28, 1979 ) was an Ethiopian theologian and general secretary of the Mekane Yesus Church .

Life

Tumsa helped found the Council for Cooperation of Churches in Ethiopia , an ecumenical council, and was elected its first chairman.

Tumsa was arrested for the first time in 1977 and was only released after pressure from abroad. The second arrest took place on July 28, 1979. He was murdered by Derg soldiers and was called the Dietrich Bonhoeffer of Africa in the following years .

After his death and inspired by his life, the Gudina Tumsa Foundation was established in 1992 and the Gudina Tumsa Theological Forum was launched in 2008.

On March 18, 2013, Federal President Joachim Gauck visited Tumsa's grave.
