Gudok
Novgorod lute, 12th century

Gudok is a bow-drawn bowl-neck lute made in Russia with a pear-shaped or almond-shaped body made from a piece of wood. The gudok has three strings , of which the highest tuned leads the melody, while the two lower strings sound like drone strings. They are both tuned a fifth lower.

A string instrument corresponding to today's gudok was found near Novgorod on Lake Ilmen together with box zithers of the wing-shaped husle type and dated to the 12th century. The gudok is related to the Byzantine lira , which was first depicted in the 10th century. Other string sounds derived from this include the Bulgarian gadulka and the guslice played in Montenegro .
