Guido Tonelli (born November 8, 1950 in Casola in Lunigiana ) is an Italian experimental particle physicist who played a leading role in the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 with the CMS collaboration .

Guido Tonelli

After graduating (Laurea) in physics in 1975 at the University of Pisa and then worked on particle physics experiments at CERN , including NA1 , NA 7 and ALEPH and from 1981 to 1987 at the CDF of Fermilab . There he researched, among other things, new supersymmetric particles and the Higgs boson and undertook precision measurements on the standard model and the lifespan of mesons with charm . Since the early 1990s he has been involved in the development of the CMS experiment of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. From 2010 to 2011 he was its spokesman, after having been deputy spokesman since 2007.

In 2012 he was one of the winners of the Special Fundamental Physics Prize for the likely discovery of the Higgs boson with the CMS collaboration that same year. Also in 2012 he became Commendatore of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
