Guillaume Massieu
Guillaume Massieu (born April 13, 1665 in Caen , † September 26, 1722 in Paris ) was a French Jesuit , classical philologist and Romanist .
life and work
Massieu studied with the Jesuits in Paris and taught in Rennes . During a postgraduate course in theology in Paris, he was released from the Jesuit order and took a position as tutor with Louis de Sacy . With Jacques de Tourreil (1656-1714) he translated from ancient Greek and in 1710 became professor of Greek at the Collège royal (today: Collège de France ).
Massieu was a member of the Académie française (1714) and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .
Massieu wrote the foreword to the second edition of the Dictionnaire de l'Académie française (Paris 1718) and left (ud T. Histoire de la poésie ) a history of French literature from the Middle Ages to the early 16th century.
