Guillaume Rivière

Guillaume Rivière (born August 15, 1655 in Montpellier , † July 14, 1734 in Lavérune ) was a French doctor and scientist .

Life

As the son of the respected and wealthy chemist Louis Rivière, Guillaume Rivière enjoyed an excellent education at an early age, which initially took him to the Jesuit college in his hometown. Well prepared, he began studying medicine at the traditional medical college of Montpellier ( École Médecine ). After obtaining his doctorate , he began to practice as a doctor - based on rational observation and experiment - whereby it is emphasized that he also visited poor sick people throughout his life and treated destitute people free of charge. His colleague and contemporary Julien Offray de La Mettrie , also known as a philosopher, mentions him by name as a representative of famous modern practitioners .

After the death of Arnauld Fonsorbe in 1696 Rivière applied for the successor to his chair in chemistry at the University of Montpellier, but with Antoine Deidier one of the six competitors was preferred. In 1706 he was appointed as one of the 15 associated members of the newly founded Société royale des sciences de Montpellier in the chemistry section, where he also served as treasurer ( trésorier ) of this scientific society until his death in 1734 .

As a researcher, Rivière planned an investigation of all mineral sources in Provence , a project that he was only able to achieve in part. He also described Gabian's petroleum source and, with the help of chemical analyzes, sought to prove that the fossilized shark teeth known as Glossopetren are not natural games , but organic remains of fish.
