Guillermo García Frías

Guillermo García Frías (born February 10, 1928 in El Plátano , Municipio Pilón , Province Oriente (now Granma )) is a Cuban revolutionary commander . He was a member of the Cuban Rebel Army and is a close confidante of Fidel Castro and is a member of the State Council of Cuba .

life and work

García Frías was born in 1928 to a poor rural family in the Sierra Maestra region. He was one of the revolutionaries who led the guerrilla war against the then Cuban President Fulgencio Batista from this region . As a local, García Frías had an excellent knowledge of the geographical features of the Sierra Maestra. García Frías acted like Celia Sánchez as a contact person for the local farmers.

After the victory of the revolution in January 1959, García Frías was given the rank of Commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces by Fidel Castro. Since 1976 he has had the honorary title of “Comandante de la Revolución”, which apart from him was only awarded to the guerrilla veterans Juan Almeida and Ramiro Valdés .

García Frías held various government offices in the socialist republic of Cuba. As a member of the Communist Party of Cuba , he was responsible for reforming the Cuban armed forces. He was Vice President of the State Council of Cuba and Minister of Transport. Currently García Frías is still a member of the State Council of Cuba and secretary for environmental issues.
