Gullveig ( old Norse gold potion , gold rush , gold strength ) is a goddess of Germanic mythology . She belongs to the family of the Vanes .

Gullveig's duties included treasure tending and the magic of Seiðr . Thus she had visionary abilities ( Germanic seer ). Gullveig came to the sir and brought greed for gold over the gods. The gods demanded the secret, the source of wealth. Gullveig refused, so the sir burned her three times. (Edda, Völuspa 21-22). Experienced than the Vanir by this death, they were incensed, and a war broke out between them: the Æsir-Vanir War .
