Gulshan ( Bengali গুলশান Gulaśān ) is a district ( Thana ) of Dhaka , the capital of Bangladesh . Several embassies and high commissioners are located in this residential area with many restaurants and shops, including the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany . According to the 2011 census carried out by the statistics office in the Ministry of Planning, the district had 253,050 inhabitants.

history

Gulshan was founded in 1961 as a model city for the upper class and at that time formed a Pourashabha , a municipal body. The neighboring Banani (founded in 1964) and Baridhara were combined with Gulshan to form Gulshan Thana in 1972 . In 1982 the Pourashabha was dissolved and in 1984 Gulshan was incorporated into Dhaka.

On July 1, 2016, a group of Islamist-motivated perpetrators attacked a café and took a double-digit number of people hostage . A total of twenty guests, two police officers and six of the attackers were killed.
