Gumtree is one of eBay acquired brand name of urban Online - Classifieds portals. The classified ads are free or paid, depending on the product category and location.

history

Gumtree was founded in March 2000 by Michael Pennington and Simon Crookall as a local London classifieds and community website, primarily to provide English-speaking immigrants from Australian, New Zealand and South Africa with an overview of vacant accommodations, new jobs or contacts in London . The term Gumtree (" rubber tree ") was chosen as an Australian synonym for the eucalyptus tree , since at least the genus occurs in all three countries.

In September 2004 Gumtree launched a Polish site. In May 2005 Gumtree was bought by ebay . In the same month Gumtree opened an office for the German market in Berlin . In the same year, an Italian portal was opened through offices in Milan and Rome . Two years later, Gumtre expands into the USA with offices in New York , Boston and Chicago .

In June 2013, an ad was posted on Gumtree offering rent-free accommodation to a lodger willing to dress and act like a walrus. The ad was shared on various sites such as BuzzFeed and Mashabl and caught the eye of director Kevin Smith , who used the ad as inspiration for his 2014 film Tusk .
