Gunbound is a massive multiplayer online game from Softnyx, which is based on the artillery principle from Worms , Ballerburg or Tanks of the C64 generation. Gunbound was played by an average of 17 million people a month between August and October 2006. According to Softnyx, over 900,000 people from 80 countries took part in the game's world championship in November 2006 and played for $ 10,000 in prize money. In 2005 Gunbound was named one of the top three games in the Philippines. In 2006, the Brazilian magazine PC WORLD awarded the game the online game forerunner reward . In April 2009, GOA, the operator of the German Gunbound platform, announced that the operation of the required servers would be discontinued on May 31, 2009.

Game content

You play on different 2D landscapes either alone or with up to three players against an equally large number of opponents, with each player only controlling one figure. The figures are either male or female. The weapons that can be used in the game are determined by choosing a vehicle; there are more than ten different ones to choose from. The vehicles are divided into different classes, for example plant or laser vehicles, and show resistances and / or weaknesses for the weapons of the counter class. The choice of vehicle, however, is not of decisive importance, because each of them has advantages in the form of very powerful special attacks or more radius of movement per round etc. You can gain more advantages and thus chances of winning by buying equipment for your character. These can be viewed in the shop in the main menu and can be bought for the in-game currency gold. The objects give the figure, as in classic role-playing games , for example more vitality or better shields; a deterioration in the properties is also possible. There are four categories of objects: head, body, face, and hand; only one of each category can be worn at a time (with exceptions).

In addition to gold, the currency cash can also be used; this is converted in a certain ratio to the amount of money actually transferred to the company (1 USD = 1000 cash). With cash you can also buy the particularly strong items. However, there are also game servers on which the objects have no effect and only exist optically, so that only the actual skill counts here. The operator tries to motivate players with new items or more bonuses through various campaigns, for example Valentine's Day .

Gameplay

As with Worms or Ballerburg , it depends on the choice of weapon, as well as its special flight characteristics, wind direction, wind strength and angle of fire. There are various bonuses for particularly complicated shots, for example for a shot in a wide arc against the wind or for particularly high damage to the enemy. The bonuses are paid in gold; you get additional gold if you are the winner of a game round. The game promotes communication through the ability to form guilds that can compete against each other.
