Gunnar Larsen
Gunnar Otterbech Larsen (born February 5, 1900 in Kristiania , † November 5, 1958 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer, translator and journalist. He was editor and from 1954 editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dagbladet .
life and work
Gunnar Larsen studied law from 1918 to 1923. In 1920 he published the student magazine "Akademisk Revy". After graduating, he worked as a journalist. In 1926 he translated Hemingway's first major novel Fiesta , which influenced Larsen's later writing style. In 1930 he became a permanent editor for the daily Dagbladet . From then on he shaped the newspaper with his new style, expanded the cultural section and gave young writers more opportunities to publish.
His first novel I sommer was published in 1932 (German translation 1933: Im Sommer ). A year later his second book was published, the crime novel To mistenkelige personer (Two suspicious persons) , a documentary novel based on an actual incident, namely the murder of a Lensman in 1926 . The work caused a sensation and was made into a film in 1950.
“ Almost everything in this novel is action and concrete observation - the description of the outside gives an idea of what is going on inside the person. In no other work in Norwegian literature is the real Hemingway style carried out so consistently as here. "
The setting for his novel Week-end i evigheten (1948; radio play 1960) is in the woods north of Oslo. Two different courses of action, one set off in italics, are assigned to one another. As an author, he is a pioneer of a later literary trend.
Larsen edited numerous plays for the theater (including Lysistrata by Aristophanes ) and translated 16 novels, including Hemingway's Snow on Kilimanjaro and Across the River and into the Forests . In 1949 he was awarded the "Gyldendals Legat". In 1954 he became editor-in-chief of Dagbladet . In 1958 he died of cancer and was buried on Vår Frelsers Gravlund in Oslo.
