Gunungsitoli is a port city on the Indonesian island of Nias and as the capital of the administrative district of the same name, it is also the economic and administrative center of the island off the west coast of Sumatra . It belongs to the Sumatra Utara Province (North Sumatra ).

Gunungsitoli has around 118,000 inhabitants (as of 2007 ) on an area of ​​280.78 km², which is around 106 inhabitants per km².

Several hundred people died on the island as a result of the tsunami that was triggered by the seaquake in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004 , as well as during the earthquake of March 28, 2005 . In Gunungsitoli, the earthquake destroyed up to 80% of the city's buildings. The airport was also badly damaged, but has now largely been rebuilt.
