The Gurminj Museum is a museum in Dushanbe , the capital of Tajikistan . The exhibition is dedicated to the musical tradition of the country and the associated musical instruments.

history

The Gurminj Museum was founded in 1990 by its namesake Gurminj Zavkibekov , a famous Tajik musician. The basis of the exhibition are traditional instruments from Zavibekov's home region, the Autonomous Province of Berg-Badachschan . After the founder's death in 2003, his son Iqbol Zavkibekov , also a musician, took over the management of the museum. In 2018 the move of the museum to a new building was announced.

exhibition

The core of the exhibition are more than 100 musical instruments, mostly from the Gurminj Zavkibekov collection. String instruments and drums dominate , especially from Berg-Badachschan and other parts of the Pamir Mountains . Before the museum moved, there were regular live performances by bands and musicians in the museum, but this was discontinued after the move. The museum has set itself the goal of conveying the musical tradition of Tajikistan and encouraging music-making. With this in mind, school classes also visit the exhibition regularly.

business

The operation of the museum is largely based on the work of volunteers. The financing is secured by international donors, among other things, and the museum is funded by the Tajik Ministry of Culture.
