from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A lost form is a mold that is used only once, and after the casting to be destroyed must to around the workpiece removed from the mold . It is used to produce a single copy of a sculpture , a relief , a workpiece and surfaces. If multiple copies are to be made, when working with lost molds, it is necessary to build the mold several times as well.

Casting processes with lost form are used with a wide variety of casting and molding materials. They are used, among other things, in artificial casting , in dental technology and in the metal and food industries .

Areas of application

The lost form is suitable for casting clay models in plaster . Multi-shell molding is typical: the two shells are then put back together and filled with plaster of paris. After that, the shells have to be knocked off - they are destroyed and lost. This process is also used in the manufacture of dentures . Another known technique is the lost wax technique , which is particularly suitable for large master forms.

Also with lost forms different casting process work with fine-grained or powder-like form material as the sand casting and the food processing strength casting process for gumdrops and other sugar confectionery .

Larger bells are traditionally cast in lost molds made of clay, sand or cement. Friedrich Schiller honored the bell casting using the clay molding process in his song about the bell , in which he sums up the principle of the lost form in a nutshell: If the bell is to rise, / the form must go to pieces.
