The Gustav Landauer Memorial was erected in memory of Gustav Landauer in 1925 at the Munich forest cemetery . It was destroyed in 1933.

history

The first plans for this from 1922 were based on the ideas of a Landauer's daughter. This idea was taken up and implemented by the Munich labor exchange of the Free Workers Union of Germany (FAUD). From 1923 onwards, donations were collected from all over the world, especially from other FAUD local associations. But also some prominent donors were on the list: the women's rights activists Lida Gustava Heymann , Anita Augspurg and Helene Stöcker . The monument was several meters high and bore the inscription: Now it is still a matter of making other kinds of sacrifices, not heroic, but quiet, inconspicuous sacrifices, in order to set an example for real life. 1870 - Gustav Landauer - 1919 . An inauguration ceremony on May 1, 1925 with the invited speaker Rudolf Rocker was banned, however, in order to “prevent the unquestionably expected violations of the law” according to the police declaration. In the following years, around 70 people gathered at the memorial at the beginning of May, including FAUD syndicalists and “ Free Singers ”.

In 1933 the monument was destroyed by the National Socialists.

In June 2017, on the initiative of Siegbert Wolf, a new memorial stone was erected at the site of the old Gustav Landauer monument. Two parts of a split basalt block are connected by hardened glass. The text from 1925 is engraved into the glass. On the 100th anniversary of Landauer's death, a memorial service was held at the forest cemetery.
