Gustav Guhl (* 1910 in Zurich ; † 1978 in Schöfflisdorf ) was a Swiss hairdresser . As an entrepreneur, he founded the Guhl hair care brand .

Life

Gustav Guhl learned the craft of a women's hairdresser after finishing school. In 1932, the Swiss won the world title in Zurich in the 'day hairstyle' discipline. Then he worked in a well-known salon in Zurich. Later he did his hair on luxury ships as well as in first class hotels. The hairdresser was the first in his field to introduce short haircuts for women in China and Japan.

At the end of his travels, Guhl completed a chemical-cosmetic training in Paris and then founded his own company in 1937: Laboratoires Guhl. He manufactured his own hair care products on his farm in Schöfflisdorf . The ambitious entrepreneur initially carried out sales himself and did the sales force on a bicycle.

In 1946 Guhl further developed his hair care products and integrated natural raw materials, some of which came from his own cultivation on the farm and his distillery. The use of natural substances such as peach oil , wheat germ oil , egg cognac or beer should solve the various hair problems.

With the advertising slogan: “There is nothing better for your hair”, Guhl products ( shampoo , conditioner, etc.) were also introduced in Germany and Austria in 1966 .

This was followed by the export of Guhl products to England and France. Back then, the shampoo bottles were still made of glass and had a rooster logo - Guhl is a Swiss corruption by Gockel . In the 1970s, Franz Beckenbauer advertised the Swiss care brand in TV spots. The glass bottle was reissued for a short time in the 1990s.

Company founder Gustav Guhl died in 1978 at the age of 68. The medium-sized company was taken over by Beiersdorf AG and incorporated into the joint venture Nivea Kaō KK founded with the Japanese Kao Corporation . In 1980 the Guhl brand was introduced in the Netherlands. Beiersdorf withdrew from the joint venture in 1991, so that the Guhl brand is now fully owned by Kao Corporation, which also owns the Goldwell brand, among other things .
