Portrait of Gustav Mezey (ca.1930)

After studying art in Budapest and at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, he turned to commercial graphics and developed his style in the art of large-format figure and portrait painting using the newly emerging airbrush technique. In the first heyday of cinematography, from 1925 until the beginning of the sound film era in 1930, Mezey came out with poster designs that drew attention to him. His often bold choice of colors made his posters extravagant and effective. Until 1960 he worked for UFA, Sascha, Terra, Tobis, MGM, Rank. Although Mezey also worked in Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Munich, Belgrade and Trieste, Vienna remained his preferred place of work. He declines offers from Samuel Mayer ( MGM ) to move to Hollywood. Working in Vienna until his end, Mezey succumbed to the consequences of an injury at the age of 82, which he sustained when he fell from a ladder while working on a large-scale plant.

His grave was in Vienna's Central Cemetery Group 75A, Row 31, Number 15.
