Gustav Wilhelm Friesenegger (born February 20, 1796 in Efringen-Kirchen -Blansingen, † June 7, 1859 in Schopfheim ) was a painter from Baden.

Life

He was born as the son of the ministerial pastor Jakob Christoph Friesenegger and his wife Elisabeth Stahl. In 1846 Friesenegger married Henriette Geiger with whom he had three daughters.

He first attended the Latin school in Lörrach . Because of his recognized talent for drawing, he came to the Lörrach indienne printing works as an apprentice draftsman . On August 12, 1821, Friesenegger was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the subject of printmaking (especially copperplate engraving and landscape). In 1823 he presumably stayed temporarily in Paris for study purposes. After his father died in 1823, Friesenegger and his younger brother, Carl August (1798–1875), opened a drawing school in Schopfheim . It is assumed that the Frieseneggers were allowed to use rooms in the higher middle school free of charge and that they gave drawing lessons at that school.

His landscapes are shaped by Swiss vedute painting . During his stay in Munich he orientated himself at the Munich landscape school of Johann Georg von Dillis and Wilhelm von Kobell . In his pictures, however, there are also influences of romanticism . Friesenegger's works are mainly done with chalk, ink , sepia and as watercolor . Many of his works are not signed. Today his landscapes with motifs of the Wiesental from a time before the Wiesental Railway was built and the river was straightened are of particular cultural and historical interest.

Friesenegger's daughter Luise bequeathed the paintings from her father's estate to the Schopfheim Museum in 1936–1938. In 1936 an exhibition of his paintings was held in Schopfheim. On the occasion of his 200th birthday there was again a large-scale exhibition in Schopfheim in 1996 for which a catalog was created.

Honors

The town of Schopfheim made Friesenegger and his brother honorary citizens in 1841. In Schopfheim a path was named after the Friesenegger brothers.
