Gutasaga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gutasaga is a record probably dating back to the 13th century about the early development of Gotland .

The legend has been handed down through an ancient Gutnian manuscript from the 14th century and a German one from the 15th century. The Gutasaga reports, probably not true to all points, of the first settlement of Gotland and the emigration from the island to the east and south-east. The emigrants are said to have penetrated into the Eastern Roman Empire , which harmonizes with the history of the Goths .

The proclamation of Christianity by Olav the saint on Gotland is also reported (which does not seem historically verifiable), the first church buildings and the voluntary submission of the Gotlanders to the King of Svear and the Bishop of Linköping .

The Guta saga is an important document for the development of the Old Gutnian language.
