The Gutbrod Atlas was a pickup truck that was built as a flatbed, box van and with various special bodies. Its regular production began in 1950 in the Calw plant of Gutbrod Motorenbau GmbH. A pilot series was produced at the end of 1949. The maximum payload was 700, 800 or 1000 kg, depending on the variant.

engine and gears

The first engines of the Gutbrod Atlas were two-cylinder with a displacement of 576 cm³ with an output of 16 HP at 3500 / min, 1953 increased to 662 cm³ and 19 HP at 3500 / min; From February 1953, a three-cylinder engine with a capacity of 987 cc and 28 hp at 4000 rpm was also available. The engines were started with a 6-volt starter on a 75-Ah starter battery. The top speed was 70 km / h. The fuel consumption of the air-cooled Schnürle two-stroke engine installed in the rear is said to have been around 9.5 liters to 10 liters per 100 kilometers. The tank held 27 liters. All versions of the Gutbrod Atlas had an unsynchronized three-speed gearbox.

In the advertising Gutbrod highlighted “the engine concentrated on the rear axle”, which in conjunction with the “modern driver's cab arrangement” means that the load distribution is the same for empty travel at the front and rear and offers the highest level of driving safety, especially on wet, slippery roads and on hills. Furthermore, it was said that the "advantageous rear engine arrangement" saves a long power transmission via cardan shaft with all its disadvantages.

landing gear

The Gutbrod Atlas had a central tubular frame. The front wheels were suspended on double transverse leaf springs, the rear wheels on a pendulum axle with coil springs. The car only had shock absorbers at the front. The brakes of the first versions were operated mechanically, from February 1953 hydraulically. The steering wheel had a diameter of 400 mm, steering ratio 11: 1. The tire size was 5.50–16 or 6.00–16 on the Atlas 1000, the turning circle was 9.60 m. The front-link cab was made of sheet steel, had a full-length windshield and rear-hinged doors. This made the vehicle similar to its competitors Tempo Matador , Tempo Wiking and Goliath GV 800 .

The loading area of the normal flatbed truck was 2600 mm long and 1750 mm wide, with a vehicle length of 4150 mm and a wheelbase of 2200 mm. In 1950 this car cost DM 4,980; about 700 DM less than the roughly equally strong Goliath GV 800.

Production time

A total of 10,906 Gutbrod Atlas were produced in the following variants:

  • Atlas 800, January 1950 – February 1953
  • Atlas 800 / H, February 1953 – mid-1954
