Gwerz (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gwerz was a Breton folk band founded in 1981 that dedicated themselves to the revival of Breton music in the 1980s and 1990s . The name of the group refers to a form of song in Breton music (see Gwerz ).

The instrumentation was rather traditional compared to the folk rock that was emerging at the same time : Bombarde (Youenn Le Bihan), Binioù Ulleann Pipe ( Patrick Molard ), Fiddle (Jacky Molard), clarinet ( Erik Marchand , also vocals) and guitar (Soïg Sibéril). Bruno Caillat took over the percussion .

Although their music is often compared to that of Kornog , success outside of Brittany has been rather limited. After two albums, Gwerz broke up in the late 1980s. For the 20th anniversary of the foundation, the former members came together again at a festival. The resulting live album is one of the most outstanding Breton folk music.

From 1982 to 1993 the branch Pennoù Skoulm also existed , which was developed together with members of Kornog. Here, too, Breton music was in the foreground.
