Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety

The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety ( DG SANTE for short , until 2014 DG SANCO ) is a Directorate-General of the European Commission . She is assigned to EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides ( Health and Food Safety ).

tasks

The Directorate-General was set up to improve the health and safety of European citizens and to increase consumer confidence. The European Union has adopted numerous rules on the safety of food and other products, on the rights of consumers and the protection of human health over the years. The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety has a mandate to keep this legislation up to date.

The regulations on health and consumer protection are applied by the national, regional or local government agencies in the EU member states . Their job is to ensure that food producers, manufacturers and retailers in the respective country comply with the legal requirements. The Directorate General has the task of checking the implementation.

Project funding

The General Directorate promotes consumer protection projects , such as safety-relevant product tests for consumer goods such as bicycles , bicycle trailers or child restraint systems from Stiftung Warentest .

From 2008 the General Directorate supported the establishment of the Euromomo project for pan-European monitoring of mortality . It collects data from 18 European countries, the four parts of the United Kingdom and two German federal states continuously and promptly in order to make the effects of seasonal flu or a pandemic on death rates visible across national borders.

The directorate-general consists of six directorates in Brussels, which are divided into four to six departments depending on their size.

  • Directorate C: Public Health (4 departments)
  • Directorate D: Health System and Products (5 departments)
  • Directorate E: Food production safety (6 departments)
  • Directorate F: Food and Veterinary Office (7 departments)
  • Directorate G: Veterinary and International Affairs (8 departments)
