General Directorate for Trade

The Directorate-General Trade of the European Commission ( Directorate-General Trade , internal abbreviation: TRADE) manages the organizational trade relations with third countries outside the EU . This includes negotiations with third countries, efforts to improve market access for importers and exporters as well as the implementation of fair rules on the international market, taking into account the social and ecological effects of international trade.

The sovereign trade relations of the European Union include:

  • Regulation of the exchange of goods
  • Regulation of services and foreign direct investment ( Foreign Direct Investment )
  • Commercial exploitation of patent rights

From January 2011 to May 2019, Jean-Luc Demarty headed the General Management . On June 1, 2019, Sabine Weyand took over the management.

The Commissioner for Trade in the von der Leyen Commission has been Phil Hogan since December 1, 2019 .
