The Gymnasium Münchberg is a secondary school in Münchberg and offers the acquisition of the Abitur in a mathematical-scientific and a modern language branch.
history
The old building of the Gymnasium Münchberg was built in 1910 as a preparatory school according to the plans of the Munich architect Julius Beeckmann. After the number of pupils had decreased more and more in the following years, and the institution had closed its doors in the early 1920s, the city received approval in 1922 to establish a secondary school with six classes. The school building, now vacant, was rebuilt for this purpose in 1923 and expanded to include physics and chemistry rooms in 1927 and 1928. Only a few remains of the royal preparation institute are left today: the banister made of gypsum concrete was heavily changed during the renovation in 2011 and other parts, such as the original coffered wooden doors and the interior design of the vestibule, were completely destroyed. The organ commissioned by GF Steinmeyer & Co. to provide musical instruction to the pupils was sold to Veste Coburg in 1923 , where it is still in service today in the Luther Chapel. In the course of the school reforms during the Nazi regime, the Münchberg Realschule was also restructured into an upper secondary school in 1937 . During the Second World War and afterwards, the building was used as an auxiliary hospital.
The first Abitur examination took place in 1950. After the nationalization of the school in 1957, it was expanded in 1965 to become a mathematics and natural science and later also a modern language grammar school. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in 1972. In 1962 and 1972 the school was expanded to include classrooms, specialist rooms and a triple sports hall. Architecturally striking is the atrium, which can be seen from all floors of the new building and which takes its name from the fact that light can enter through skylights. The old building on Hofer Strasse is a listed building .
Renovation from 2009 to 2011
The grammar school was completely renovated between 2009 and 2011. In the course of the project, which was realized in a public-private partnership , the building was sold to a private company and rented by the district of Hof . The cooperation between the two institutions began in 2009 with the renovation of the new building, which was completed in 2010. The renovation of the old building was completed a year later, whereby the work fell victim to a mural by the artist Max Wild as well as some last traces of the old furnishings, such as the original tiles in the vestibule and the old wooden doors. Changes were made in particular to the outer facade of the listed building: The undivided aluminum windows built in the 1980s were replaced by new ones made of plastic with split bars in order to bring the appearance of the building back to its original state. In the auditorium, too, the light openings in the three large gables, which were walled up for thermal protection reasons, have been reopened and provided with windows, which now provides a more coherent picture overall.
PiKANT canteen
At the school there is the PiKANT canteen where students cook for students. In 2008 she took first place in the category of partial meals for children in the Essen pro Gesundheit competition organized by the State Ministry for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection . In the ProSieben competition Galileo's best canteen with Sante de Santis, the team behind the Audi factory canteen in Neckarsulm took second place, but also received a trophy due to the interesting concept. The program was broadcast on May 7, 2009 on ProSieben.
environment
Since the beginning of 2009, the Gymnasium Münchberg has been able to call itself an environmental school in Europe with the official presentation of the award on January 21 .
