The Städtische Gymnasium Würselen is a state-recognized high school in the city of Würselen .

In the second half of 2020, the grammar school was attended by 825 students. It is an old and new language as well as mathematical, scientific and musical grammar school and is run as an all-day school .

In 2015, the school introduced the first so-called iPad classes , in which all students were leased with iPads . For the 5th and 6th grade, the students have the opportunity to choose the wind class.

In addition to the lessons, various working groups are offered as part of the full day, which can have a sporting or cultural character, or also depict leisure activities. A cafeteria was built so that there is adequate food for the lunch break. This is also used by the primary school located next door. The cafeteria is operated by a specially founded association.

Foreign languages ​​and international exchange

In addition to English, the other regularly taught foreign languages ​​are French and Latin (from grade 7) and Italian (from upper secondary school). The grammar school regularly organizes stays abroad or exchange trips:

  • Andover / Great Britain (stay to practice the language and get to know the country)
  • Le Havre / France (exchange with the Collège Henri Wallon )
  • Trapani / Italy (exchange with the Liceo Scientifico Vincenzo Fardella )
  • Florence / Italy (individual exchange)

iPad concept

In 2015, the school first introduced individual iPad classes in which all students were leased to be equipped with iPads. Since the school year 2018/2019, all classes across all grades have been using iPads. The school has received several awards for the iPad concept (see awards). The teachers developed the didactics around the concept themselves and presented it at events and at numerous interested schools.

  • In 2017, the then Federal Minister of Education, Johanna Wanka, presented the Digital Education Innovation Prize
  • Awarded as a digital school by the "MINT Future" initiative of the Society for Information Technology and the Internet association Eco
  • In 2018, the school was the first high school in North Rhine-Westphalia to receive the Smart School by Bitkom award (Bitkom is an industry association for the German information and telecommunications industry).

Further activities, projects and commitments

In 2014, the school took part in the School Without Racism project for the first time.

In addition, students are committed to helping the homeless. Donations in kind were collected and the students helped with the distribution of food and clothing.

Another project are the school guides, who regularly support pedestrians every school year at critical junctions in the city center. The school has been participating in the European Union's Erasmus + program since 2019 .

For the 5th and 6th grade, the students have the opportunity to choose the wind class. After that, students can join the school orchestra, big band or other music groups at the school. The instruments for the wind class are provided by a rental service. Instrumental lessons are given by teachers from the local music school. The orchestra and the other ensembles take part in various musical events.

As part of the French subject, the high school offers its students the opportunity to take the various levels of the DELF certificates (Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française).

Numerous activities are offered in the so-called MINT area (natural sciences and computer science). So the students choose e.g. B. an environmental parliament and an environmental council. These committees deal with practical issues relating to school operations and are intended to promote the development of awareness for the environment. In addition to many other options, the pupils can also take advantage of offers at various school laboratories, for example at the DLR School Lab , or at school laboratory events at RWTH Aachen University or Aachen University of Applied Sciences .
